The Mekong Water Dialogues, convened by IUCN and supported by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, was initiated to work with countries of the Mekong Region - Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam - to improve water governance by facilitating transparent and inclusive decision-making to improve livelihood security, human and ecosystem health.

Four years after the deadly Indian Ocean tsunami devastated the Asian coast, the need to restore, protect and invest in coastal ecosytems is clear. The difficult task to bring together different agencies, sectors and countries who are addressing today's challenges related to climate change and overpopulation, is now the responsibility of the unique multi-partner initiative called Mangroves for the Future (MFF) and led by IUCN and UNDP.

In the last few centuries we have removed more than half of the world's forest cover. Deforestation is currently responsible for nearly 20 per cent of global carbon emissions. We need to reduce this tide of deforestation, but we can make a much greater impact if we also put back some of our lost forests.
Planting more trees can lock up more carbon, improve the environment and people's lives. Many regions and countries have already restored much of their forest. This short video, produced by the Forestry Commission for the Global Partnership on Forest Landscape Restoration, looks at some fantastic examples, including an IUCN project in China, spanning three continents.

The Tajumulco and Tacana volcanoes soar high above the coffee plantations that cover the hillsides on the border of Guatemala and Mexico. At 4,400 metres, Tacana is the highest volcano in Central America. These two volcanoes are at the heart of a watershed system that is almost a million years old. This system is now under threat by the increasing levels of water pollution from the coffee industry, as well as erosion, deforestation and pollution caused by hillside communities. But it is coffee farmers themselves who are now leading the way in trying to turn around the fortunes of this threatened eco-system. At the river source at the very top of the mountain the water is pure. As it descends it becomes more and more polluted. It's here at the top that the problems begin.
