We ask prominent figures from around the world, representing both the public and the private sector, what they see as the greatest priorities for saving biodiversity after 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity.

Four years after the deadly Indian Ocean tsunami devastated the Asian coast, the need to restore, protect and invest in coastal ecosytems is clear. The difficult task to bring together different agencies, sectors and countries who are addressing today's challenges related to climate change and overpopulation, is now the responsibility of the unique multi-partner initiative called Mangroves for the Future (MFF) and led by IUCN and UNDP.

The Shadow of Kilimanjaro: TVE production, boradcast on BBC World Earth Report (2008)

IUCN Pangani River project: http://www.iucn.org/about/work/progra...

In the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Pangani river is at the centre of a struggle for water. Poor rainfall in recent years has left the land, the dams, the people and animals thirsty for water. Demand is growing even as supplies diminish. Without intervention the outlook is bleak. Earth Report investigates the shortages, the conflicts and the plans to safeguard the health of the Pangani river basin.

This song was composed for World Water Day 2011 by Ronn Simpson and the Water & Wetlands Programme at IUCN's Oceania Regional Office. The theme for World Water Day 2011 is "Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge".

What do we need when the land is dry?
Where do we go when the sun is high?
Many will answer "water is for life"

Water for you, Water for me
Water for the animals, Water for the trees
Water for every-one in so-ci-ety

CHORUS
We are working together to keep our water clean
Treating water as a "treasure" in our urban community
The careful use of this resource is now on you and me
Conserving water for a happier Fiji

END CHORUS
We need clean water for a healthier Fiji

What role do forests play in combating climate change and providing livelihoods for millions of people around the world? How do forests affect all 6.8 billion people on the planet? Stewart Maginnis, Director of IUCN's Environment and Development Group, answers these questions on Global Connections TV.

In Bangladesh, IUCN is working with local communities to conserve and sustain a unique wetland ecosystem, Tanguar Haor. This biologically diverse area, which is home to some rare plant and animal species and supports the lives of more than 56,000 people, was declared a Ramsar site - Wetland of International Importance - in 2000.

Alongside being globally important for its exceptional biodiversity, Tanguar Haor also plays a critical economic role for Bangladesh. The wetland supports freshwater fisheries, directly sustains the livelihoods of over 56,000 people from 88 surrounding villages and largely contributes to the country's food production and security.

But the standard of living in Tanguar Haor is very low, and the wetlands are being exploited in an unsustainable manner. IUCN works to make sure that Tanguar Haor's rich natural resources are being conserved and used more sustainably. It aims to help local communities manage the area more efficiently and create new opportunities to generate income.

We share the planet with as many as 13 million different living species. This rich biodiversity provides us with health, wealth, food, fuel and the vital services we depend upon to live. We are part of nature and we have the power to protect or destroy it.

Gill Shepherd, IUCN Livelihoods and Landscapes Strategy Thematic Adviser on Poverty and Landscapes, speaks on the latest thinking on forests and poverty, drawing from lessons that have come out of IUCN's innovative 'Livelihoods and Landscapes Strategy' (LLS).

The LLS initiative represents a new way of thinking -- from seeing nature as needing to be protected from threats, to promoting negotiated plans and actions for productive landscapes.

To achieve this, the development and application of LLSs by our initiative goes beyond forest management and includes positive links with other sectors such as agriculture, water, energy, health and the private sector.

The application of livelihood and landscape strategies should provide for immediate needs as well as supporting long term change to improve human wellbeing and livelihood resilience.
